If you have an interest in management and choose to undertake undergraduate studies in business, keep in mind that career development starts the minute you step foot in your first class! There are many things you can do during your studies to be career ready; here are just a few:

1) Choose a Field
See what areas you can specialize in, whether your interests are in finance, accounting, marketing, human resource management or in other areas! Most business programs allow you to explore these fields in the beginning of your program through introductory courses. Go beyond that by talking to senior students, professors and professionals in these fields to see which best matches your interests.

2) Gain Valuable Experience in Your Field
Find opportunities to volunteer in your community or gain relevant work experience through a Cooperative Education or internship program; such programs can often be integrated in your university degree.

3)Develop ‘Life’ Skills
Go beyond your studies and get involved in student clubs (conferences and social events) and other activities that you are passionate about (sports, hobbies, etc.). This will help you to develop useful skills such as leadership, teamwork and creativity while having fun.

You can even gain an international perspective by participating in an exchange abroad!

4) Network
Take the time to meet people and connect with classmates, professors and employers. Who knows, they may be your colleagues some day!

5) Be Prepared
Visit your career centre early to get help creating your career portfolio and polishing your resume and interview skills. Don’t wait until graduation to get ready for your future!
