When you hear the word “scholarship” you typically think… “I need to be an A+ student to apply.” Well, think again! At Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops BC, we break the scholarship stereotype and reward students for more than just academic excellence.

TRU recognizes students who not only achieve good marks but those who stand out in leadership roles and who are involved in the community. Each year, TRU gives students more than $300,000 in entrance scholarships ranging anywhere from $1,000 - $20,000. The most prestigious award at TRU is the Ambassador’s Entrance Scholarship, awarded to students who show academic excellence, leadership and community service. They will have their tuition and student fees fully covered for four years (up to $5,000/year). Visit the TRU Financial Aid and Awards to learn about our other scholarships and to apply. If you are planning on applying for any of the TRU entrance scholarships, do so by the March 1st 2012 application deadline.

TRU also offers bursaries to students who may not qualify for scholarships but can show that they have financial need. These bursaries are not based on grades, leadership or community service and can be used towards tuition, housing, food etc. As a TRU student you can apply for bursaries after your first year of university.

Last year TRU gave over $1 million dollars in scholarships and bursaries to new and returning students. The thing to remember about scholarships and bursaries is that you only have a chance at the free money if you apply! So get those applications in as early as possible and see what happens.

As you make your final decisions about university, keep in mind that the best way to learn more about scholarships and to see TRU is to come for a campus tour!
