Did you know that more than 80% of college graduates complete at least one internship? Also, in more colleges than not, internships have become an important piece of the graduation requirement. But what makes an internship beneficial? Most of the time, there is no pay, very little office space, menial tasks, and the constant feeling of being an outsider; however, the benefits of an internship far outweigh any of those factors. A general rule of thumb when considering an internship opportunity is to abstain from looking at what the internship is not, but rather look at what it is. Remaining optimistic and embracing a positive approach to the internship is the key to its success and to unlocking its rewards.

In every internship, the intern will have to work a little harder, be a little nicer, and portray as much professionalism as possible. Embrace every task – even photocopying – with enthusiasm. Be outgoing and say, “Good morning,” “How are you?” and “Have a good night,” to your co-workers. Making an effort to be courteous and friendly will pave the way to a comfortable working environment. As you put into practice the professional you, also remember to pay close attention to the actions which might shed a negative light on your image. Always arrive on time, offer to stay late if needed, don’t participate in office gossip, don’t complain about your tasks, and exceed all of your deadlines.

You should learn as much as you can about the company and about the industry. Ask questions to your supervisor. They know that the internship is a learning experience and expect you to want to understand their processes and learn their procedures. A co-worker, or a more seasoned intern, is also a good asset. They can act as a mentor and help guide you in the right direction. By showing initiative and interest, you are not only proving your readiness to take on the position should it be offered to you, you are building a strong list of possible networking prospects.

Internships can be stressful and overwhelming, but don’t forget to make them fun as well. Get to know your co-workers on a professional level and be sure to engage in office meetings and conversations. Internships are great experiences and, ultimately, the possible rewards gained, are priceless.
