On Vancouver Island, students have a post-secondary secret. They’re getting a university degree for less by going to college, first.

At North Island College, students pay less tuition and lower rent than they would at other West Coast schools, and get access to scholarships from both schools.

University Partnership programs, such as dual admission, allow students to take up to two years of university transfer courses in the college’s small discussion-friendly classes, while guaranteeing their admission to University of Victoria, Royal Roads University, Vancouver Island University (VIU), or the Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

Dual admission offers access to four universities, six degrees and 67 majors. Whether they want to get a Commerce degree, a Bachelor of Science degree, or a Bachelor of Arts degree, students get university credit for courses while paying B.C.’s lowest tuition. Plus, University of Victoria-bound students qualify for a long list of UVic scholarships and bursaries, as well as scholarships available only at NIC.

North Island College student Emma Dubé, was able to earn $23,000 in scholarships from the University of Victoria and NIC by applying for both schools at the same time.

“I think it’s smart to know what you want to do before you spend your money somewhere else,” said the 17-year-old with a GPA worthy of any post-secondary school in Canada. “When I do get to university, I can concentrate on keeping my grades high instead of a part-time job.” What’s more, applying is easy. Students fill out one form to apply for both schools.
