When it comes to studying, university is quite a bit different from high school. No one, but you, is responsible for ensuring you learn the material, so forming effective note taking, studying, and time management strategies can really make the difference between success or failure. University counsellors say one of the most common problems for first-year students in their transition to university is they overestimate their ability to do well. So, below are some tips for success in your first year of university and beyond.

Student Services and Resources
There are so many resources available to students to make transition to university life stress-free. You may not find you need to use any of these services right away, but you might know someone who does…either way, it’s good to be aware of them.
  • Register in one of the Foundation for Success courses, which are one credit seminars designed to enhance student success throughout university in areas like study skills, wellness and learning perspectives.
  • Visit the Free Math, Economics and Writing Help Centres, to get one-on-one assistance from upper level students and professors.
  • Participate in a Supplemental Learning study group which is an organized, peer-led study session that provides helpful study tips and a great environment to learn.
  • Speak with your professors! Many of TRU's professors believe in an open door policy and also have mandatory office hours. Feel free to stop by and ask questions about past lectures, exams or study tips.
Studying and Time Management
Time management and prioritizing are two of the most important components of successful study habits. Many students don't realize how much reading and material there will be for each class and unfortunately they fall behind. Knowing this, there are a number of things you can do to stay on top of your work! Remember - good study habits usually mean you do better in quizzes and exams!
  • Use your student agenda to set goals and schedules for studying. Make studying part of your daily routine.
  • Pre-read materials before class
  • Take notes in class
  • Highlight text books and class notes
  • Use study groups – some people learn best when they can teach the material
  • Don’t procrastinate
Remember, everyone has their own way of transitioning to university and what works for one person doesn’t always work for the next. However, by following these simple tips, you increase your opportunity for success. TRU is Canada’s most comprehensive university, offering degrees, diplomas, certificates, and post-graduate programs in many different disciplines.
