Back to school means different things to different people. For returning students it’s a time to reunite with friends and continue studies. For new students, the start of university is usually accompanied by a host of emotions: excitement, anxiety and a sense of beginning a new stage in life. Algoma University is committed to making the transition to university as smooth as possible for new students regardless of their educational background. To help with this, we surveyed some current students to find out what advice they would like to pass along to the incoming class. Here is what they had to say:

Tip #1
– Register for courses early. The earlier you register for classes, the more likely you are to get the courses you want. If you are unsure which courses to take, don’t be afraid to consult with an academic advisor, they are experts on which classes you need to take to meet your degree requirements.

Tip #2
– Make a budget. It’s not always fun to do, but making a budget and sticking to it will alleviate a lot of financial stress down the road. Algoma University offers budgeting services for new students with plenty of tips for stretching your money.

Tip # 3
- Register for Frosh Week! You’re only a frosh once, take advantage of it. Frosh week is a great way for students to make friends and find out about academic services at the university. Getting to know other students who are also experiencing university for the first time makes the transition a lot easier.

Tip #4
– GET INVOLVED - words to live by. Algoma makes it easy with our variety of student clubs, student union, varsity teams, volunteer opportunities, employment, and much more!

Tip #5
– Take advantage of the services! Algoma University has a fantastic group of individuals in student services that are dedicated to helping our students achieve success. First generation students will want to sign up for our mentor program. It’s a great way to find out about university life from a student who has just gone through it.

Tip #6 – Organization is the key! Provide yourself with enough workspace for functional work/study sessions (laptop, textbooks, notebooks, writing space, etc). Sort your work as often as possible and keep a recycle bin close by for unused material. Make sure you pick a comfortable place to study, if you aren’t comfortable, you probably won’t spend much time studying.

Following these tips will take some of the stress out of back to school time.  It’s an exciting time for new students and an exciting time for university staff and faculty.

We can’t wait for you to get here.

See you in September!
