So you chose a direction and started to plan.  You sent in your application and waited for that thick envelope to arrive congratulating you on your acceptance and telling you about the exciting year ahead.  But the envelope that arrived was thin and inside it was the end of your best laid plan. So maybe your first choice for your education and career path didn’t pan out.  While you might be discouraged, a change in plans doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the line. In fact, now might just be the perfect time to reassess and explore what other options are available and may even be better fit for you.

If you have always been interested in science, mathematics or technology and your plan to attend a general science, biology or chemistry program isn’t in the cards, there are still many opportunities to build on your strengths in more targeted programs leading to specific, high-demand careers.

You may want to consider Seneca’s Biotechnology Technologist (Research) or Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs and Quality Operations (Co-op) programs. The Biotechnology Technologist (Research) program prepares students for careers in research laboratories of university, hospital and government institutes, as well as in the research and development areas of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Alternatively, if you were hoping to pursue a career in business, but a general business degree isn’t for you, there are many programs that will help you gain the knowledge you need to succeed in today’s business world. For example, Seneca’s Business Management – Entrepreneurship and Small Business program, teaches students the skills required for the planning, start up, management, and expansion of successful small businesses. If you want to specialize your skils even further, you might consider the Green Business Management Graduate Certificate, once you have a diploma or degree under your belt.

There are multiple paths you can take to ultimately achieve your goals. Many college programs are still accepting applications.  Consider calling the registration office of your local college to find out what options are available. There are so many possibilities, and your perfect program and career might just be a mouse click away. So don’t think of that rejection letter as a closing door, think of it as an opportunity to get more creative in your search for a path to your goal.
