It’s really important to research prospective schools to see if they’re the right fit for you. You need to make sure that the school you choose has the program(s) you’re interested in, and that you keep your options open. Visiting websites is a good place to start; for example, explore.usask.ca tells you everything you need to know about the University of Saskatchewan, both the admissions process and program availability.

Admissions requirements and protocol can be hard to understand, so talking with your high school counsellor is a good idea. Most universities and colleges have phone numbers and email addresses so that you can contact the admissions department. Here at the U of S, the admissions department email is admissions@usask.ca, but you can find that information online for most schools.

Despite the fact that we don’t all like to do it, getting advice from your parents, older siblings or someone who has been to post-secondary school is a good option. Maybe you haven’t considered all of your options, and talking to someone who has “been there” can be helpful. The U of S has blogs (link “blogs” to http://explore.usask.ca/blogs/) written by students that can give you a good idea of what life here is like.

So if you only remember three things during your school search, let it be these:
1. Do the research, keep your options open, and explore websites.
2. If you don’t understand, don’t be afraid to ask questions in person, via email or over the phone.
3. Get advice from someone you trust.
