Let’s face it, studying can be frustrating for even the best students.  Everyone has their own way of doing it and what works for one person doesn’t always work for the next.  But Thompson Rivers University can help with finding the study habits that suite you best.

Stay Organized and Prioritize
One of the biggest issues students face when it comes to studying is time management.  I know you’ve heard it before, but don’t leave studying or reading until the last minute.  The best way to stay on top of your studying is to stay organized and prioritize.

If that means using post-it flags on important readings or sitting down and writing a to-do list every day, then do it!  Also, when it comes to readings, sometimes you have to learn to let go: your professor does assign them for a reason but it’s impossible to thoroughly read everything.  So, skim, use your class notes as a guideline and only re-read what is important or relevant.

And don’t forget the good old agenda book….it’s a great resource to highlight deadlines and actually see the time you have to study and therefore plan ahead.

TRU’s Helpful Resources
Once you’re organized, take advantage of the various study sessions and help that are offered.  TRU offers various one-credit Student Success Seminars designed to enhance student success throughout university.  For more information, check out our TRU Course Schedules from our homepage www.tru.ca (course codes STSS).

Furthermore, TRU also has free Math, Writing and Economics Help Labs on campus.  They’re staffed by upper level students in each discipline and professors and are great to work through that tough problem you’re stuck on.

If you work better in groups, also check out the Supplemental Learning Sessions that TRU offers in a variety of subjects.  They’re organized, peer-led study sessions that provide helpful study tips and a great environment to study.  Check out the website for a complete list of sessions and times: http://www.tru.ca/studentservices/sl.html

Finally, if you’re still having trouble, remember that your professors are always there to support you.  Most professors at TRU have an open door policy which means they want you to go talk to them for help.  They just want to see you succeed, so why not go say ‘hi’? And remember, you’ll always learn best when you’re awake, so try to avoid those pesky all-nighters.

TRU is a Canada’s most comprehensive university, offering degrees, diplomas, certificates, and post-graduate programs in many different disciplines.  Visit www.tru.ca to learn more or to apply today!
