Forming study groups with your classmates can be an effective way to learn while getting to know your peers. Study groups can be especially effective when learning difficult concepts or preparing for exams. While the benefits of study groups are rewarding, there are some potential drawbacks. Read on to learn more.

Motivation is key to studying, and having a study group that relies on you for participation can help keep you motivated. If you are hesitant to ask questions in class, this is a great forum to discuss theories and ideas that may be unclear. If you don’t have the answer to a question, odds are one of your classmates does. You will not only learn course material from others, but may also pick up effective study habits that you can utilize. Conversely, teaching material to others in your group will help you reinforce and build upon concepts.

While studying in groups can be highly beneficial, be cautious to stay on track. Being sociable with your classmates is great, but remember that you are there to learn and study. Stay on track, and consider rewarding yourselves with a night out to socialize once that big exam is over. Remember that a study group should be a place that all members contribute equally, and should not be dominated by a few individuals.

We asked a few students at Stenberg College how they form effective study groups. They suggest finding like-minded peers that are motivated not only to learn, but to excel in their program. Typically, a group of 3-5 is ideal as larger study groups can be difficult to manage. You may find that not only do your grades improve, but you have new friends that help keep you motivated!
