As fall approaches, you might be looking forward to attending a post-secondary institution for the first time, or returning to school after a previous career.

Either way, September often represents the start of a new chapter in a student’s life. There are a number of things you can do to get involved in your new community to make it a smooth transition back to the books.

Orientation is always a great way to get accustomed to your new surroundings and learn what to expect when classes begin. This year at Seneca, Orientation will be held August 31 to September 2 at each of the college’s four main campuses. At Orientation events you will meet other new students, student leaders, faculty and staff; you will be able to tour your campus, visit different service offices and learn all that you need to know to get started on the right foot.

In addition, you may want to consider attending one of the welcome BBQs to be held at each of the four main campuses this fall, or joining a student club or association. Many student groups exist that allow you to meet people with similar interests or backgrounds who might not be in your program of study.

Once classes begin, you may want a little guidance to help manage your course load and prepare for tests and exams. Seneca’s Learning Centres provide workshops for students on a range of helpful topics including listening to lectures, note-taking and time management skills.

Learning strategists are also available to provide one-on-one support with other academic challenges. If you need assistance understanding course material, you may also want to consider getting a free tutor from the Learning Centres. At Seneca, tutoring is available one-on-one or in small groups.

If you want to keep informed of what is happening at your college throughout the year, there are a number of electronic and social media outlets that can help. For example, on Seneca’s Facebook and Twitter pages, you can get important news about programs, events, announcements, closures and/or openings, opportunities and contests.
