Humber’s Social Media connection a hit with students

Launched in March 2009, Humber College’s official Facebook page has become a crucial recruitment and communication tool, largely due to Nick Farnell, Humber’s New Media Communications Specialist and Facebook mediator. With 7,350 users, Humber has the largest college Facebook site in Ontario. With constant daily activity, students posting questions receive a response from Farnell, or other participants, within hours.

“What makes Facebook successful as a recruitment tool is its ability to connect with and talk to students in a way that’s comfortable for them. Prospective students are highly peer influenced, so when a current Humber student answers a prospective student’s question, it really hits home for them,” says Farnell.

The benefit of social media for any college is the ability to reach students anywhere in the world.

“International students look for information on placement testing, housing and making connections with others in their program. Facebook is an ideal place to make these connections prior to arriving on campus,” says Farnell.

When Farnell isn’t engaging with students on Facebook, he’s likely tweeting or seeking out tweets to respond to on Twitter

“People have learned to ask well informed questions in 140 characters,” says Farnell. “Twitter allows us to get the word out about Humber activities and achievements to our 2,200 Twitter followers in mere seconds, and it really impresses a student when they realize their college is on twitter.”
