As a Career College, triOS College constantly helping our students improve their job seeking skills to land the career that they want.  Résumés can be one of the most important tools to land an interview, and yet common mistakes happen all the time.  So what are the biggest mistakes people make on their résumés? Common mistakes can really be broken down into two categories - mistakes regarding design, and mistakes regarding content.

Design:

• Try to keep résumé length down to one or two pages.
• Do not use heavy paper, overly elaborate designs or other embellishments.
• Use bullet points because it brings attention to your key skills and achievements.
• Avoid using cookie-cutter designs as you will be lost in a sea of other candidates.

Content:

• Résumé Lacks Focus!  It is important to organize your items in an order that appeals to the reader’s interest.
• Try not to bury important skills, especially computer skills, at the bottom.
• Out-of-date content.  Highlight your relevant experience and skills within the last few years.
• Do not list your references right on your résumé.  Note that references are available upon request.
• Proofread, Proofread, Proofread!

These mistakes are made frequently, and in most cases they are easy to avoid.  Why do yourself an injustice by submitting a résumé that is not up-to-par?  Commit yourself to creating the best résumé and you will see the results!  To find out more about triOS Career Services, please CLICK HERE
