“Minimum 80% average” should be the mantra of any student hoping to win a scholarship because it is the mandate for those awarding the scholarships. Academic institutions want students who are serious about success. While some awards may be based athleticism, volunteerism, humanitarian interests, or simply the course of study at a given institute, the vast majority are awarded based on academic merit. Hard work, commitment, and strong study habits are the key to achieving the top marks required to win the most generous financial awards.

Convince yourself that being an honours student is possible. Make a plan, then act on it.

Ask for help. Let your teachers and guidance councillors in on your goal of a minimum 80% average. Ask them to help you understand, and do, what it will take to earn top marks. Be sure to know the criteria for a paper, lab, test, or exam so you can be prepared and turn in the best possible work.

Tell everyone who will listen about your plans for success. If your friends and family are aware of your commitment to academic excellence they will become your own personal cheering section. When you choose studying over activities that previously occupied your time, they’ll understand and be supportive. Wouldn’t your Mom love to have a bumper sticker on her minivan stating: “I’m the proud parent of an honour student!”?

It may happen that in some of your courses, you may have already received your final mark, and it’s not quite high enough – chin up! You can upgrade that mark. Online high school credits are available and those earned from eSchool carry the same weight as those earned in a traditional classroom. The extra effort will pay off – in cash!

Scholarships can range from as little as $100, up to the full four-year tuition – and then some! They’re going to be awarded to someone. And, that someone should be you!
