For university-bound students, the costs of post-secondary education can seem quite intimidating at first. Fortunately, there are a number of things that prospective students can do to reduce their tuition bills. Taking full advantage of available scholarship opportunities is one of the most important tactics that students can use.

Algoma University distributes more than $400 000 in scholarships and bursaries to students each year. Some common questions that prospective students often ask are answered below.

How do scholarships at Algoma U work?
Scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of academic achievement; however some also take into consideration factors such as leadership and community involvement. Many scholarships are renewable, meaning that you can continue to carry them in later years of study, so long as you maintain certain levels of academic performance. Decisions on the awarding of scholarships are made by the Financial Aid Office of Algoma University.

Are applications required?
If you have applied to study at Algoma U, you will be automatically considered for a number of scholarships, such as the Algoma University Awards of Excellence, the Carl J. Sanders Scholarship and several others.

However, for others like the John R. Rhodes Scholarship and the Algoma U Alumni Entrance Awards, students must submit an application in order to be considered. Written essays are also a component for some of the awards.

Are there any scholarships that specifically apply to me?
Students come from many different backgrounds and Algoma U’s scholarship offerings reflect this diversity. There are awards geared specifically to college transfer students, mature students, Anishinaabe (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) students, and international students.

There are also some entrance scholarships that are specific to certain programs, such as the Robert Belair Memorial Fund for the Bachelor of Business Administration program and the Digital Adventures Entrance Award for Computer Science.

How can I learn more?
A full list of available scholarship opportunities is available on the Algoma U website. If you have any questions about scholarships or other academic awards, please email awards@algomau.ca.
