Entering college for the first time, starting a new program or exploring a new career direction can be both exciting and daunting. There are many choices to make and options to consider when selecting a program and an educational institution. If finances are a concern, you may also want to consider programs that offer a scholarship or bursary. If the duration of a program is a concern, there are number of programs that can be completed in eight months or less.

For example, at Seneca, the Documentary Filmmaking Institute will begin its second run in May 2010. The 14-week, intensive certificate program is designed to equip students with the critical and practical skills to work in the television and film industry as producers and directors of documentary film and non-fiction – reality and current affairs – television. This program combines hands-on production skills with a foundational knowledge of the documentary tradition and a background in Canadian and international business practice.

The program is ideal for students with little or no experience in filmmaking or television production. Students work in an intimate environment of a small class size with state-of-the-art technology and equipment. Facilitated by award-winning documentary filmmakers, students are introduced to the industry’s top professionals who will lead master classes and lectures.

This year, the program offers something new – the Allan King Scholarship. In honour of the late, legendary Canadian filmmaker Allan King, the scholarship is open to all students of the institute and will be awarded to a student who would benefit from financial assistance for their journey into the art of documentary filmmaking.
