As the days get a little longer, it becomes easier to imagine that summer camp season is just around the corner. For some, this signifies the return to an old favourite – a job at a summer camp.

If your favourite work experiences have always been at camp maybe it’s time to ask yourself what it is about camp that appeals to you as you look to forge a career path. Is it the organizational nature of it? Helping people? Art, sports, music or nature?

Some of the careers that share similarities with the camp experience include sports directors, event planners, early childhood educators, social service workers, gerontology workers, parks and recreation employees, veterinarians, business ventures, and careers in the arts.

At Seneca College, the new Therapeutic Recreation degree program, which begins in September, gives students the opportunity to turn their passion for people into their profession. With co-op opportunities and hands-on learning, Seneca’s new degree focuses on recreation, counselling and health sciences. It teaches students how the use of activities in recreation, arts, and crafts can achieve rehabilitation or change someone’s life in a positive way.

“Seneca’s new program offers a broad range of subjects and specializations and was developed with industry in order to be responsive to their needs,” said Kathy Suma, National Director, Risk Management, Extendicare (Canada) Inc. “With leading-edge education like this, there will be many opportunities for graduates to progress in the Long Term Care  industry.”

The Therapeutic recreation program offers students one of six employment-enhancement streams. The streams are addictions, community development, mental health, physical rehabilitation, wellness, and there is also an interdisciplinary stream.
