Preparing You for Real Careers for Real Life!

Other than some of the traditional careers - police officer, nurse, accountant - how many careers can you name? What is a phlebotomy technician? How about a mycologist, a cyberneticist, or an etymologist?

Whatever your career aspirations, traditional or non, Cambrian can put you on the path to success!

It’s a question we’ve all been asked at one time or another – “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  Although our childhood answers may have varied from teacher to carpenter to Olympic swimmer, deciding on a career path can be an overwhelming and daunting task!

Whether you’re a high school student trying to find that perfect career, a postsecondary student trying to decide what you’ll do with that hard-earned diploma or degree, currently employed but are looking to change careers, or unemployed and looking for a fresh start, Cambrian College is the right place to start!

Cambrian can prepare you for “real careers for real life.” The College offers

•    More than 80 full-time programs, including certificate, diploma, advanced diploma, degree, and graduate certificate options
•    More than 800 part-time continuing education programs, courses, seminars, customized training packages, and distance education opportunities, and
•    More than 150 articulation agreements with other institutions – leaving you with even more educational options once you graduate.

As a Cambrian graduate, you will play a vital role in the lives of Canadians on a daily basis. You could be the nurse, the firefighter, the dental hygienist, the graphic designer, the millwright, or the chef who touches our lives for the better each and every day. You will attend to our home and mechanical needs. You will keep us healthy and safe. You will feed us and inform us. You will meet our community and leisure needs. And you will ensure economic growth through the business, industrial, and trades sectors.

But how do you decide which career path is right for you? Start by figuring out who you are and what you want out of your career.

1.    Do a self-assessment. Take a personal inventory of your abilities, talents, needs, values, interests, and the lifestyle you want to live.

2.    Explore your options. By investigating your own interests and examining what’s out there in the world, you take responsibility for your own future.

3.    Determine a direction. Think short-term and work backwards to figure out what you’ll need to do to get there.

4.    Make it happen! This is the most important step.  We can help!

Cambrian provides resources to help you choose your ideal career and map out a pathway to get you there.

The Counselling Centre can assist students who are unsure of their career interests and are having difficulty choosing a College program that best suits their strengths and goals. Our counsellors can provide career interest testing, which is available free of charge to registered students.  The test utilizes the Strong Interest Inventory, a career exploration tool that provides you with a detailed report. The report is reviewed with you during a follow-up appointment with one of our counsellors.

The Student Employment and Co-op Services office coordinates student and graduate employment activities, and provides students, graduates, and employers with a variety of information and services including: career counselling; assistance with résumé writing and cover letters; assistance with interview preparation, including mock interviews, an on-campus work program; access to employment postings for full-time, part-time, co-op and summer positions; an annual career and job fair that is held in February of each year; year-round job posting services for employers; facilities for employers to interview on campus; and direct referral services to employers.
