Gaining experience can come in many forms, and starting earlier makes for an easier transition from university to career.  Read more…

Often, there isn’t one particular thing you can identify that will lead to landing a great job the day after graduation.  Of course there are structured work experience programs like Co-operative Education, practicum placements, and internships, designed specifically to give students relevant, hands-on training, but there are many other options to gain useful experience.

Co-operative Education
The Co-op program sees students alternating between on-campus semesters of study and off-campus, paid work, allowing students gain practical experience in their field.

Hundreds of TRU students in Arts, Sciences, Business, Computing Science, and Tourism programs are in co-op jobs around BC and Canada.  Co-op Abroad is also an option.   For more on TRU Co-op Education, visit www.tru.ca/careereducation.

Practicum Placements/Internships
Another way for students to combine theory with hands-on learning is through a practicum placement or internship.  These placements vary in length but are part of the program and allow the student to practice in their field under the direction of a professional.  Unfortunately, practicums and internships are often unpaid, but its’ really the experience you’re after, right?

TRU programs that include practicums include Education, Social Work, Nursing, and Respiratory Therapy; the TRU Bachelor of Journalism program includes a mandatory internship.

Study Abroad
There are some things you just can’t learn from a book or from work experience. That includes many of the worldly sensibilities gained when travelling abroad.

From the human/cultural aspect to handling stressful situations in another country, spending time abroad can provide graduates with interview ‘wow factors’. Plus, students get to travel as part of their education!

As the only Western Canadian university to be affiliated with ISEP (International Student Exchange Program), TRU has access to over 300 exchanges all over the world. To learn more about TRU’s Study Abroad program, visit www.truworld.ca.

Co-op terms, practicums, and Study Abroad semesters aren’t the only ways to gain experience. Directed studies, research, work study positions, field studies, student clubs, volunteering and various partnerships can result in the ultimate learning-by-doing. Be sure to check out the many ways you can get involved at university.
