Choosing the right career isn’t always easy. With a wide variety of schools and program offerings to choose from, the task can be overwhelming. When making this important decision, it is a good idea to look at the current job market and at which jobs are in demand.

Hospitality and Tourism is the fastest growing industry on the planet, according to the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council. With rapid growth comes the need for workers at all levels and currently the demand for skilled employees exceeds supply.

Canadore College’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts is the perfect place to obtain the skills needed to start a career in this exciting industry.

Canadore grads get jobs. The College has a reputation for producing high quality graduates with job-specific skills that employers recognize. Almost 9 out of 10 of our grads find jobs and start their careers within six months of graduation. At Canadore, students learn from the best. We have recognized experts in accommodation, food and beverage, food and nutrition and culinary arts who teach industry-standard training in an intimate learning environment. Our up-to-date, advanced labs, kitchens and in-house student restaurant provide learning that has immediate on-the-job applications.

Students can choose from one of our diverse career paths:

Hotel and Restaurant

Canadore offers extensive training in the business of hospitality with the Hotel and Restaurant Operations and Hotel and Restaurant Administration programs. Hotel and Restaurant Operations is a two year program that offers extensive study in the areas of management, food and beverage service and related fields pertaining to the operation of hotels, resorts and restaurants. The three-year Hotel and Restaurant Administration program is comprised of the most comprehensive hospitality management curriculum in Canada. Emphasis is placed on developing analytical problem solving and thought processing skills. Career opportunities include Hotel and Restaurant General Manager, Executive Assistant Manager, Director of Operations, Director of Food and Beverage, and Front Office Manager. Depending on the size of the business, General Managers can earn upwards of $80,000 per year.

Earn While You Learn: These programs include 1600-2000 hours of paid work placement. Previous students have enjoyed placements at Marriott Canada, Banff Springs Hotel and Jasper Park Lodge, to name a few.

Food and Nutrition

Canadore's Food and Nutrition programs are for individuals who have an interest in food, nutrition, healthy eating and management. Our programs are accredited by the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management and offer the training and knowledge needed to succeed in this field. Our two year Food and Nutrition Management program trains students to become skilled service professionals. This program provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to confidently perform food service responsibilities in a variety of settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, retirement homes, correction facilities, private industry and schools.

Canadore also offers the three year Food and Nutrition Administration program that has a managerial focus. The training is a unique blend of business, marketing, food, nutrition, human relations and supervisory courses. Food and nutrition administrators are employed as food and service department directors and assistant directors, directors of support services, high-level administrators in large organizations, consultants and health and wellness counsellors.

Remember: Approximately 9 out of 10 of our grads find jobs and start their careers within six months of graduation.

Culinary Arts

Canadore offers high quality programs in Culinary Arts that includes the two-year Culinary Management and the three-year Culinary Administration program. With a diploma from one of these programs graduates have a diverse choice of jobs, from apprentice cook to executive chef. Under the coaching and guidance of culinary award–winning chefs de cuisine and experienced hospitality professors, students gain valuable hands-on experience in our $2.5 million hospitality and tourism centre which houses state of the art, classrooms, experimental production kitchens adining room facility. We also offer the Culinary Skills – Chef certificate where students receive the necessary skills to start a career as a professional cook or chef in today’s growing and challenging cooking industry. Topics of study include the fundamentals of food preparation, presentation and management of kitchen production. Also, you can earn while you learn in the Cook apprenticeship programs.

Did You Know? Chef Daniel Esposito, a professor in Canadore’s Culinary Arts programs, received his formal training in the Champagne region of France and is a qualified Red Seal Cook with a list of national and international awards and professional
memberships to his credit.
