University is expensive, so why not make it easier on yourself and apply for some scholarships? Scholarships abound at the University of Saskatchewan (Link: “University of Saskatchewan” to: http://explore.usask.ca/) and I’m here to give you a quick rundown of what’s available.

Here at the U of S, we have three main types of awards (Link: “awards” to: http://explore.usask.ca/moneymatters/awards/): Guaranteed Entrance, Transfer and Competitive.  You can search for scholarships and find information regarding eligibility, criteria and amounts online.  (Link: “online” to: http://explore.usask.ca/moneymatters/awards/)

Guaranteed Entrance Scholarships (Get good grades, get free money)

Guaranteed Entrance Scholarships (Link: “Guaranteed Entrance Scholarships” to: http://explore.usask.ca/moneymatters/guaranteed/) are easy to qualify for. All you have to do is earn an average of at least 85% in high school and you qualify! A higher average means you’re entitled to larger amounts of money! Up to $3,000 dollars can be yours. The moral of this story folks, is that it pays to bump your marks up. If you’re even considering post-secondary education you’ve proved you’re pretty wise already.

Transfer Student Scholarships (For those who made the right decision … eventually)

Transfer Student Scholarships (Link: “Transfer Student Scholarships” to: http://explore.usask.ca/moneymatters/transfer/) are the same basic idea as Guaranteed Entrance Scholarships but, they are for students who went to a different university, realized the U of S was a better fit, then successfully transferred to the U of S having completed less than 18 credit units. (Link: “U of S” to: http:explore.usask.ca). See, we even reward those who don’t come straight to the U of S. We’re fair that way.

Competitive Scholarships

Competitive Scholarships (Link “Competitive Scholarships” to: http://explore.usask.ca/moneymatters/awards/) are fair game as long as you meet the individual scholarship criteria. This isn’t as complicated as the previous sentence made it sound. Think of it like this: don’t apply for a history scholarship if you want to study engineering. If it clearly states that those eligible must be from a rural high school, don’t apply if you’re a city slicker. I’m willing to bet all my Star Wars collectibles that you won’t get either of those. A common misconception is almost all of these scholarships look at academic achievement first and foremost, but that’s not always the case. If you have lots of volunteer, community, and leadership experience but your marks aren’t in the 90s, you still have a very good chance of being awarded the scholarship.

PROTIP – According to the Association of Facts that Aren’t Quite True but are Probably Really Close to Being True, a large percentage of awards go unawarded yearly because no one applies for them.  They’re too busy thinking “my marks aren’t high enough” or “I didn’t volunteer enough.” Apply for any and all the scholarships that you qualify for and who knows, you might just get a couple. They go a long way in helping out with your money worries and budget (Link “budget” to: http://explore.usask.ca/moneymatters/budgeting/). Really, the worst case scenario is you don’t get it.  It’s not like someone is going to make you listen to Yanni for the rest of your life because you didn’t get that scholarship.

The U of S Advantage (Really, when isn’t there one?)

Here at the U of S we have something for the best of the best. For those of you that excel in the areas of academics, we have something for you! Welcome to the Greystone Scholars Society (Link “Greystone Scholars Society” to: http://explore.usask.ca/moneymatters/greystone/)!  If you’re accepted as a Greystone Scholar you get a whole host of goodness coming your way. Once again I’m limited by space constraints to list them all, but here’s a couple:
-    A guaranteed Entrance Scholarship worth $3000!
-    Preference in a U of S residence.
-    Personalized help through an assigned Recruitment Officer and correspondence during your Grade 12 year with current Greystone Scholars attending the U of S.
-    Greystone Scholars Spend-A-Day (link “Greystone Scholars Spend-A-Day” to: http://explore.usask.ca/events/spendaday/), an exclusive tour of campus.

So there you have it. A large variety of awards that are there to help you get the education you’ve dreamed of.  So when you come to the U of S, make sure to look through the available awards and apply by February 15 to maximize your chances!
