When it comes to choosing the right school for post-secondary education, there is not a shortage of options. Finding that perfect fit can be long and complicated but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Remember who you are and what you are looking for…and I don’t just mean what academic program. There are a number of things you may be unsure of,  but deep down inside, you know what you like and what you don’t. First, figure out what kind of student you are. Are you outgoing and social? What interests you? Are there hobbies or extra-curricular activities  you want to pursue? Where will you be able to spread your wings and take-on new challenges? Do you want to stay local, or move away from home? Do you like to stand out? Or would you rather blend in? By answering these questions you will be well on your way to figuring out the kind of school that will be a good fit for you and your goals.

It may seem a little unorthodox to look at schools before programs, but choosing a really good fit for you is essential to your happiness as a student. Information like class size, student population, campus size, social  and physical environment come into play here.  Be sure that you look at what different schools have to offer so that you are not surprised. If a school does not have what you need - keep looking! Remember, guidance counsellors, recruitment officers and current post-secondary students are great resources of information at this juncture. Contact them with questions and concerns, they are there to help. Don’t alter your expectations based on schools you think you should attend. Choosing the right college or university is about you!

Once you have narrowed your options - go ahead and look at programs. Keep in mind that it is  okay to be unsure of exactly what you want to study. This is not something you have to figure out at 17. Liberal arts Universities are a great alternative for driven students who are unsure of their career paths. If you find yourself in this position, look into institutions with flexible curriculums that allow students to change their minds and alter their courses throughout their degree. Be weary of specialized programs that limit mobility and elective courses unless you are absolutely certain of what you want to study. One of the best things about post-secondary education is figuring out what you like and who you truly are.

After you have chosen your program and narrowed your choices to a handful of institutions, wait. Sit on these schools for a couple of days and let your options simmer. Each one of these choices presents countless opportunities for you. Trust that you will make the right decision and above all, remember:

Choose to be yourself and don’t force a fit! The right school for you is out there. You just have to find it!
