Ahh, summer – a welcome brain-break from textbooks and studying, and a great opportunity to earn some money and maybe even get experience in your field.

Summer Employment - Good for Cash in Hand

Whether it’s a summer job you’re looking for or whether you’d like to gain some career-specific practical experience with the Co-operative Education program, the Career Education Department at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, can help.

There are still dozens of summer job postings on the TRU Student Employment website (www.tru.ca/careereducation/stuemploy), including for full-time, part-time, and even volunteer positions. Anyone is free to view the postings, which range from general retail/sales, to positions like Marketing Assistant or Engineering Tech.

If you’ve been pounding the pavement but haven’t received any callbacks, maybe you need to change up your strategy. For tips on how to improve your job search, cover letter, resume, and interview, click the students tab on the TRU Student Employment page (www.tru.ca/careereducation/stuemploy).

Co-operative Education – Earn While You Learn

If you’re looking beyond just a summer job and contemplating possible careers, research into occupational profiles can provide you with some insight (check out www.workfutures.bc.ca and www.jobfutures.ca), but having the chance to sample a few different jobs and network with professionals can genuinely help narrow your focus.

For the ultimate in experiential learning, Co-operative Education (or Co-op for short) is a formal, structured way to gain practical experience in a particular field. It allows students to integrate paid (yes, paid!) work semesters in their field of interest, into their education.

It’s a win-win all around as students gain experience while networking and making money, then graduate with Co-op distinction, which employers recognize and value.

The TRU Co-operative Education Department is partnered with hundreds of employers nationwide (though primarily in BC) and helps match anywhere between 200-300 TRU students per year with co-op jobs. Visit www.tru.ca/careereducation/coop
