Worried you’ve missed the boat for university degree or diploma programs? Not so! As a different kind of university, Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, accepts applications all summer and what’s more, admission is not GPA-based.

If you’re shopping for universities right now, either your first choice didn’t work out and you’re reluctantly picking up the pieces (sigh), or you didn’t even get around to any post-secondary planning and just realized you don’t want the phrase “would you like fries with that?” to have a permanent place in your vocabulary.

Either way, Thompson Rivers University is here for you. While TRU is the first choice for thousands of students from BC, Canada, and abroad (10,000 students including 1,100 international students), the university’s varied program offerings and flexibility around admission make it an ideal Plan B.

TRU is a comprehensive university offering the full gamut of post-secondary programs: degrees, diplomas, certificates, and even high school upgrading. And for those looking to start in a program this fall, there is still a wide variety of program choice (see below).

Furthermore, admission into TRU’s three largest degree programs is highly flexible (in fact, admission to Bachelor of Arts, Science, and Business is actually called ‘Open’).

A key differentiation between TRU and other institutions is that TRU doesn’t require high school grads to have a minimum overall mark (or GPA), in order to apply to the university.

Instead, each program lists its own specific high school course requirements that are relevant for admission into that program. (Note: TRU also does not require BC students to write optional government exams).

High school graduates with a high GPA are awarded earlier course registration, while students who may not meet all of the admission requirements can take advantage of the Open Admission policy in Bachelor of Arts, Science, and Business – with the ability to upgrade, such students can do a combination of high school equivalency courses and first-year university courses during first year.

So whether you’re facing a Plan B scenario or just had a ‘lightbulb’ moment, TRU welcomes your application. To apply online visit www.tru.ca (click on Apply to TRU), or go to www.tru.ca/counsellors (scroll down to 2009-2010 Application for a print version).
